Enhance your creativity 2

Primary image elements are the parts of which a painting consists. These primary image elements are: line, shape, size, texture, colour, tone.
Circle of colours The triangle of red yellow and blue shows the primary colours. When these are mixed with their neighbouring colour you get the secondary colour: yellow+red=orange, red+blue=purple, blue+yellow=green. The primary and secondary colours all point to their position in the outer colour circle. Look at the colours between the bright yellow and the bright red, they are all shades of orange. The shade of orange is determined by the amount of red that is added to the mixture. This also goes for the rest of the colour circle.

Exercise Exercise in mixing colours:
Take a sheet of paper and copy the colour circle picture. Start drawing the circle and the inner triangle parts with a pencil and only use yellow, red and blue acrylic paint. Remember to repeat this exercise in a week or two and you will find it much easier then!

Tone

Toneladder The tone of a colour has to do with the amount of colourvalue that is used. A light tone will be refered to as 'watery, flat", a heavy tony as bright and powerful. Tones also can be created. Our ability to mix tones can be studied by making "toneladders". Like a pianoplayer has to practise his/her toneladders painters have to practise them in their own way. A toneladder always shows the same colour green for example. It does not change from yellow to light green to dark green to blue throughout the ladder but the green mixture you start out with will become lighter (or darker) throughout the ladder. Use white to make it whiter and black to make it darker.

ExerciseExercise toneladder
Take a colour of your choice and start making a toneladder. It is up to you to choose going from light to dark or the other way around. Try to make every next colour in a gradually flowing next tone. Start making toneladders in 5 tones.

ExerciseNext exercise is to make toneladders in 10 tones and 15 tones.
